Here goes my report of week 3 of my preceptorship at Mary Bridge.
Well the week was busy. What can I say. I worked 3 days this week. So I am 72 hours down now. 14 more days left of hospital time. On Tuesday I worked with another nurse as my preceptor was the charge nurse and I didn't feel comfortable doing charge work 4 days into my quarter. The new nurse was a little more cautious with me and pretty much gave me a patient that didn't have any medications due during the shift and wouldn't let me take care of her other patients. So my preceptor kept pulling me to do float stuff until 3. At 3, a new nurse came on and she let me take on all 3 of her patients basically saying I am a 6 level nursing student and its time I did most of it. :) So from 3-7 I gave meds, talked on the phone, took care of everything while she watched! I am thankful she allowed me to take control. :)
Friday and Saturday my preceptor was back. Friday I took on 2 patients and helped with the other 2, Saturday I took on 1 patient that was way more complicated medication wise so I only helped her with her other 2 patients. The 1 patient I had was very time consuming so I am glad she allowed me to focus on this one! Saturdays patients I was able to have a lot of teaching moments which I valued.
So lets see how I did on my goals for week---
1. Answer the unit phone :)------ Check!
2. Call the doctors and other disciplines if needed for my patients instead of my preceptor doing it - Sorta check!! I answered the phone and it happened to be the doc we needed to talk to so I did. :)
3. Document as much as I can to get comfortable - Check!
4. Study up on the meds that seem to be given on the floor a lot and give give give when I have a chance. -Studied up on ondesterone (zofran), Hydrocodone/Acetaminophen, Oxycodone (roxicodone), Insulin (novolog), Levemir (long acting Insulin), plus all the morphines, acetaminophens etc.
5. Organize my day on priorities. It's hard to know which comes first sometimes. - Created a new document so I could organize my days.
6. Have 5 new experiences!! - Check!! Don't want to give to much detail because of HIPAA laws.

Goals for week 4 (work tues/weds)...
I talk to my preceptor about my goals for this next week.
1. Chart on the care plans. I really want to be able to chart learning to use the care plans instead of the nursing notes.
2. Complete a discharge and admit on my own.
3. Find more opportunities to give more meds (especially IV meds and I want to hang Solution bags (still have not done that yet this quarter) ).
4. Continue interacting with doctors and answer phones.
5. Take on 2 patients a day again.
6. Find 5 new experiences
anyways that's everything for week 3. Onto week 4 (days 7 & 8)
