Wow I can't believe it is actually 2009! Back in the day, when 2010 Space Odyssey came out, people wondered what would the first decade of this century be like. One year away from that mark, we as human are no different than we were back in the 80's when the movie actually came out. There are a few differences of course. Our technology has advanced so rapidly both in medical and computers areas that it is amazing. Not to the technology of 2010 Space Odyssey in standards, mind you, but still technology advancements nonetheless.
The 2000's have been exciting with discoveries like the mapping of the human DNA/Genome. This is the field that fascinates me. We can now diagnose things that we could only imagine back before the turn of the century. New vaccinations, new tests for gene markers for predetermined illness (such as the breast cancer gene) have saved countless lives and allowed people to live longer, healthier lives. DNA testing has changed the way Forensic Scientist investigates crimes too. A person can no longer just commit a crime without leaving a trace of themselves all over the crime scene. DNA technology has allowed for many great things along with some downright scary things such as cloning, and resistant bacteria (which I see in the hospital from time to time) etc.
The 2000's have seen many advancements in the computer technology sector also. My first computer was the Commodore 64 releases back in September 1982. It was a DOS computer where there was no pictures but all command prompts. Remember these? We then advance to either the Apple computer or the low end PC's where we are still in DOS prompt and not the color pictures we see today... We have advance so much that we now have amazing graphical imageries and so many things dependent on the use of computers now a days.
Although we are not at the point where we all are flying in space cars to and fro, we have made a huge step in advancements to bettering our society if used properly.
Hopefully this year will bring new and better things for each of us. Enjoy the year and savor each moment......

I remember my brother saving up all of his lawn mowing money to buy a sound card and speakers for our PC, as Kings Quest was the only program with sound and animation at the time. Yes, we played that for hours!
