As I sit twittling my thumbs learning about nursing stuff, I look out the window to see passing women in 5 inch heals. Their attire is unfashionably small for their bodies, and there skirts come up to right below their bums. Then I see a car full of pathetic men drive up to them and invite them in to their car. 2 hours later I see these same women back on the rough street casing more pathetic men for their "attention".
Over and over again my peers and I see this scene unfold out side the classroom window for the 6 hours we are in class. We wonder what brought these women to the "attention" they are seeking? We see from the outside the destructive path they are leading. Some of the class, including myself have been sheltered. This is the first time we have seen this sort of behavior right in from of our faces. Some of the classmates make a comment to our Kenyan instructor, who states back to us,"the one thing you can say about those women, is at least they are more honest then what most people are about what they do."
As I sat there taken back about his comment, I finally got what he meant as I never thought about it quite that way before. Although I highly disagree with what they are doing, they at least are honest enough about it. Most people are in "hiding". We don't want people to know what we have done, will do, are presently doing. We bridle what we feel, do and say. We are not honest with ourselves and others. Another important lesson he taught that day was to be careful in judging others because we don't know what happened in their life to promote these acts.
A lessons was learned from the instructor that day as we watched those women case highway 99 in Des Moines.
